Astro-Venture Atmospheric Science Training Unit Overview
The Astro-Venture Atmospheric Science Lessons have been developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for the purpose of increasing students’ awareness of and interest in astrobiology and the many career opportunities that utilize science, math and technology skills. The lessons are designed for educators to use with students in grades 5-8 in conjunction with the Astro-Venture multimedia modules on the Astro-Venture Web site.

Lesson 1 : Atmospheric Science Training Module
Students review the basic requirements for human survival. Using an online, multimedia module, they change amounts of gases in our atmosphere and draw conclusions about the amount of each gas that is necessary for human survival.

Lesson 2: Building Blocks of Matter
Students are introduced to atoms, molecules and elements. They explore the differences in the bonds of atoms of different elements and how atoms stick together and bond to form molecules.

Lesson 3: Green house Gases: Carbon Dioxide and Water Vapor
Students explore the unique properties of greenhouse gases, which allow these gases to influence the surface temperature of a planet.

Lesson 4: The Flow of Matter--Chemical Change and Conservation of Matter
Students are introduced to chemical change and the conservation of matter during different types of chemical changes.

Students are introduced to exothermic reactions that involve oxidation.

Students explore how the creation and destruction of ozone protects us from ultraviolet radiation (UV). Students kinesthetically model the depletion of ozone caused by chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) molecules.
